Ermoupoli is the capital of Syros and of the South Aegean region — a UNESCO-recognised neoclassical port town founded by refugees from Chios in the 1820s and made wealthy by shipping. Its centre is Miaouli Square (marble), its most photographed quarter is Vaporia (the captains' houses above the sea), and its highest point is Ano Syros (medieval, Catholic).

How to arrive
The ferry from Piraeus takes two and a half to four hours depending on the vessel. Blue Star, Seajets and Golden Star Ferries run daily year-round. There is no jet-fast crossing that skips Syros — the port is a working harbour, and the arrival by sea is the correct way to see the town for the first time.
The island has a small airport (JSY) with domestic flights to Athens (SKG code AthensSyros)and seasonal service to Thessaloniki. Most guests take the ferry — the crossing is part of the stay.

Chapter 03
The rhythm of the town
Ermoupoli is a lived-in capital, not a resort. The bakery opens at six, the church bells ring at seven, and the promenade fills between nine and eleven at night. Restaurants keep late Cycladic hours. Sundays are quiet.

- How many days should I spend in Ermoupoli?
- Three to five nights is ideal — long enough to see Vaporia at dusk, Ano Syros at sunset, at least one west-coast beach, and to eat twice at the same taverna.
- Is Ermoupoli walkable?
- Almost entirely. The historic core, Vaporia and Ano Syros are all reached on foot from the port. A car is needed only for beaches on the far side of the island.
- What is Ermoupoli famous for?
- Neoclassical architecture, marble, the Apollon Theatre, its shipyards, and being the wealthiest Greek port of the 19th century.
