Syra, or Syros: an island to get to know

Syra, Syros, Σύρα and Σύρος are all names for the same Cycladic island. Syros is the official name; Syra is the older everyday one many islanders still use, and the one this house carries. The capital is Ermoupoli, which is also the main port where most ferries arrive.

This is not a list of sights. It is meant to help you decide where to base yourself, how to spend a few days, and what to check before you travel.

Where to stay

Ermoupoli, Ano Syros or a coastal village?

There is no single right base. It depends on whether you want a town, quiet, or the sea at your door.

Syra di Giovanni is in Ermoupoli. If the beach is your main reason to come, a coastal village may suit you better, and that is fine.

Three days

A flexible three-day plan

Suggested itinerary — adjust it to the weather and your mood.

Day 1 · Ermoupoli on foot
Miaouli Square and the town hall, the Apollo Theatre, then down towards Vaporia and the water. An evening in town with no plan at all.
Day 2 · Ano Syros
Go up early, before the heat, to the old settlement above Ermoupoli. Wander the lanes and come back down as the light softens.
Day 3 · The coast
Pick one coastal village, such as Galissas or Finikas, for a swim and lunch by the sea. On a longer stay, split your days between town and coast.

Arrival

Getting there, and when a car helps

Most visitors arrive by ferry at the port of Ermoupoli. The island also has an airport with domestic flights. Schedules, journey times and fares change with the season, so check them with the operators before you book.

If you stay in Ermoupoli and mainly want the town, you do not need a car: from the house the port is about five minutes on foot. For beaches and villages, a car for a day or two gives freedom. If steps are difficult for you, ask before booking about the route to the door.

Seasons

When to come

Summer is the season of the sea and of crowds. Spring and autumn are quieter and better for walking. As the capital, Ermoupoli stays alive all year, while many businesses in the coastal villages close out of season.

The residence

Staying at Syra di Giovanni

Syra di Giovanni is a restored 1862 residence at 13 Nik. Papadam St, Ermoupoli 841 00, Syros, Greece. It has three suites, each with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. Two suites can be taken together (The House), or the whole residence (The Mansion).

There is no instant calendar. You send a request, and the owner personally confirms availability and price. Dates are not held until you receive that confirmation.

Before you travel

Are Syra and Syros the same island?: Yes. Syros is the official name. Syra is the traditional everyday name many locals use. In Greek they are Σύρος and Σύρα.
Where is the best place to stay on Syros?: Ermoupoli if you want a town and walking, Ano Syros for quiet and views, a coastal village if the sea comes first. See the table above.
Do I need a car?: Not for Ermoupoli. For beaches and villages, a car for a few days helps.
